<p>The holidays are never complete without <a class="zem_slink" title="Charles Dickens" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickens" rel="wikipedia">Charles Dickens</a>&#8216; immortal <a class="zem_slink" title="Victorian morality" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_morality" rel="wikipedia">Victorian morality</a> tale&#8211;and now you can show among the best versions of the story.</p>
<p>In 1843, <a class="zem_slink" title="Charles Dickens" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickens" rel="wikipedia">Charles Dickens&#8217;</a> <em><a class="zem_slink" title="A Christmas Carol" href="http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Carol-Karen-Louise-Hebden/dp/1854599879%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1854599879" rel="amazon">A Christmas Carol</a></em> was not only a wildly popular bestseller.  In so many words, Dickens defined the modern definition of <a class="zem_slink" title="Christmas" href="http://www.history.com/topics/christmas" rel="historycom">Christmas</a> in Britain and especially in <a class="zem_slink" title="The States" href="http://www.history.com/topics/states" rel="historycom">America</a>.   Practically overnight, <em>A Christmas Carol</em> re-introduced the <a class="zem_slink" title="English-speaking world" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English-speaking_world" rel="wikipedia">English-speaking world</a> to a holiday that had been largely forgotten for almost two centuries.</p>
<p>Ever since the ban on Christmas during the <a class="zem_slink" title="Oliver Cromwell" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Cromwell" rel="wikipedia">Cromwellian</a> era, the holiday was looked down upon as an idolatrous <a class="zem_slink" title="Catholic" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic" rel="wikipedia">Catholic</a> vice.  Even in America, only Anglican Virginia and outlying German <a class="zem_slink" title="Lutheranism" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutheranism" rel="wikipedia">Lutheran</a> and Catholic settlements on the frontier really celebrated it.</p>
<p>Dickens&#8217; work practically re-oriented the holiday from its more religious underpinnings to a secular, family-based celebration of comraderie and goodwill.  Even the most dour <a class="zem_slink" title="Calvinism" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvinism" rel="wikipedia">Calvinist</a> couldn&#8217;t argue with those sentiments.  As the novel became popular, the markings of the celebration as noted on the pages&#8211;gift-giving, trees, pine wreaths, holly, carols, food, etc.&#8211;started to sprout in Britain and the <a class="zem_slink" title="The States" href="http://www.history.com/topics/states" rel="historycom">United States</a> (Puritan New England was slower in adopting it: many parts of the region wouldn&#8217;t allow Christmas celebrations until the 1870s.)</p>
<p>Thus, the holiday we see today comes almost directly from this 1843 novel.</p>
<p>Like any popular story, <em>A Christmas Carol</em> has been adapted for stage and screen numerous times.  The version attached today is among the best.  This 1971 animated film won the <a class="zem_slink" title="Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film" href="http://www.oscars.org" rel="homepage">Academy Award for best animated short film</a>: the only version of the story to be honored with an Oscar.  Directed by <a class="zem_slink" title="Richard Williams (animator)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Williams_%28animator%29" rel="wikipedia">Richard Williams</a> and produced by legendary animator <a class="zem_slink" title="Chuck Jones" href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/chuck_jones" rel="rottentomatoes">Chuck Jones</a>, the film&#8217;s style is lifted almost directly from 19th century illustrations, as well as 1930s illustrations of a popular reprint.  The tone is sufficiently dark to suit the somber Dickensian world of mid-<a class="zem_slink" title="19th century London" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_century_London" rel="wikipedia">19th century London</a>: you can smell the smog and misery.</p>
<p>I think its among the best adaptations of the story around.  The mood of the story is sufficiently dark and upbeat to satisfy all audiences&#8211;but particularly older students.  This definitely lends itself to discussions of Victorian society, values, social welfare and government policies to the less fortunate.</p>
<p>Or it just could be a great Christmas yarn (which it is).  You can decide.  Enjoy.</p>

<p>History is primarily the business of debunking popular myths.</p>
<p>Yet some myths are so scandalous, so outrageous and so off-the-wall that you sincerely wish they were true—even if you know they’re probably not.</p>
<p>Such is the case with <a class="zem_slink" title="Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Hyde%2C_3rd_Earl_of_Clarendon" rel="wikipedia">Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon</a>, Viscount Cornbury. Historians know Lord Cornbury as among the worst colonial governors in <a class="zem_slink" title="American History" href="http://www.history.com/topics/american-history" rel="historycom">American history</a>. According to 19th century historian George Bancroft, Cornbury illustrated the worst form of the English aristocracy&#8217;s &#8220;arrogance, joined to intellectual imbecility&#8221;.</p>
<p>Yet his popular reputation rests in a painting.</p>
<p>In the <a class="zem_slink" title="New-York Historical Society" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.7791666667,-73.9741666667&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=40.7791666667,-73.9741666667 (New-York%20Historical%20Society)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">New-York Historical Society</a> hangs a painting of a woman. She is a rather ugly woman wearing a nice blue period dress…and a distinct five-o’clock shadow. For many years, this painting, which is unsigned and unattributed, was believed to be Lord Cornbury himself, sparking the popular myth that he was America’s first transvestite political leader.</p>
<p>Yet looking back, the claim of cross-dressing just doesn’t add up.</p>
<p>To be fair, the transvestitism isn’t what made Cornbury such a dickhead. Apparently his whole life was an exercise in profligate douchebaggery. During an unremarkable spell as a Tory member of Parliament, Cornbury served as a <a class="zem_slink" title="Page of Honour" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_of_Honour" rel="wikipedia">Page of Honour</a> during <a class="zem_slink" title="James II of England" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_II_of_England" rel="wikipedia">James II’s</a> coronation. Yet when William and Mary came ashore in 1688, Cornbury was one of the first officers to dump James off—and take a massive load of soldiers with him.</p>
<p>His later career only gets worse. As governor of New York and New Jersey from 1701 to 1708, he earned a foul reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. He favored Anglican churches with vast amounts of real estate, in open defiance of New York’s longstanding religious toleration. £1500 meant for the defense of <a class="zem_slink" title="New York City" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.7166666667,-74.0&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.7166666667,-74.0 (New%20York%20City)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">New York harbor</a> suddenly went missing. Bribes and corrupt payoffs became commonplace. His critics described him as a “fop”, a “wastrel” a “degenerate” and a “pervert.”</p>
<p>Even the little lady at home got in the act. According to <a class="zem_slink" title="Edwin G. Burrows" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_G._Burrows" rel="wikipedia">Edwin Burrows</a> and Mike Wallace in their work <em>Gotham</em>, Cornbury ‘s wife was known as a petty thief, swiping clothes and jewels from New York society ladies: “the sound of her carriage at the door, people said, was a warning to hide anything of value.”</p>
<p>The British didn’t much care for him, either. After his removal in 1708, Cornbury landed in debtor’s prison, where he received the not so welcome news that his father died and he would be the new <a class="zem_slink" title="Earl of Clarendon" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Clarendon" rel="wikipedia">Lord Clarendon</a>. The title came with some serious money. It allowed him to get out of jail and pay his debts only to piss his fortune away again with the creditors knocking a second time. He finally dies alone and in debt in 1723, to be buried in <a class="zem_slink" title="Westminster Abbey" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.4994444444,-0.1275&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=51.4994444444,-0.1275 (Westminster%20Abbey)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Westminster Abbey</a> (in what kinds of clothes I’m not sure.)</p>
<p>Yet the story of the cross-dressing governor persists. It has taken on a life of its own: Ric Burns’ documentary on New York states Cornbury’s sartorial transgressions almost as fact. I’ve even heard teachers showing the aforementioned painting as an actual portrait of Cornbury.</p>
<p>Yet as fun as the story is, the historian in me thinks the evidence to support it is not only thin, but woefully one-sided. Patricia Bonomi, Professor emeriti of history at New York University, agrees.</p>
<p>In 1998, Bonomi wrote <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Cornbury-Scandal-Reputation-Published/dp/0807848697" target="_blank"><em>The Lord Cornbury Scandal: The Politics of Reputation in</em> <em>British America</em></a>, among the few scholarly works addressing Cornbury’s tenure as New York’s governor. In this work, she debunks the transvestite myth as a rumor started by his colonial opponents in New York.</p>
<p>First, transvestitism was, according to Bonomi, considered a heinous act in the 18th century. The painting purported to be Cornbury would probably not have been him, since such a public display was usually meted out by political cartoons and the like. It would be almost as if a pedophile sat with his/her victim for a portrait at Sears: ballsy, obscene, irrational…but probably unlikely.</p>
<p>Second, the evidence of the cross-dressing comes from four letters dated 1707-1709, all from three colonists bent on removing Cornbury from office. According to the letters, Cornbury opened the 1702 New York Assembly in an elaborate gown reminiscent of Queen Anne, claiming that as the Queen’s power in the colony he needed to represent her in every way possible. During Lady Cornbury’s funeral in 1707 (when the shoplifting was done), Cornbury also supposedly attended in female dress.</p>
<p>However, according to Bonomi, none of his officers, ministers or colonial agents ever mentioned these tendencies. None of the authors of the letters even claim to have seen this, either. It appears it was an attempt to get him out of office by any means necessary—and it worked.</p>
<p>Bonomi also claims (and I’m not totally convinced of this) that Cornbury was not as corrupt and profligate as is claimed. She claims that he was welcomed warmly in England on his return in 1709, and served high offices. I’m not as convinced at this—especially since fiscal malfeasance tends to leave a more verifiable paper trail than sexual transgressions.</p>
<p>What is important in looking at this episode—and what Bonomi gets right—is how sex was used as a political tool even in the early 18th century. The cross-dressing scandal, more than anything else, is what drove Queen Anne to replace Cornbury in 1708. Sexual misconduct, even as a rumor, is still a powerful tool, now as it was in Cornbury’s time.</p>
<p>However, even as one can probably put the transvestite myth of Lord Cornbury in doubt, there is some sense of loss. Without the hoop skirts and corsets, Cornbury becomes just another greedy colonial governor.</p>
<p>Sometimes the myths really do add to the history—even if it isn’t really true.</p>

<p>Everything about the Battle of Saratoga&#8211;including its name&#8211;has been scrubbed clean by scores of textbooks.</p>
<p>On October 17, 1777, after a punishing four-month campaign, British general <a class="zem_slink" title="John Burgoyne" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Burgoyne" rel="wikipedia">John Burgoyne</a> surrendered almost 6,000 British, Hessian and Canadian troops to the Northern Department of the Continental Army, led by <a class="zem_slink" title="Horatio Gates" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Gates" rel="wikipedia">General Horatio Gates</a> and (they should get all the credit for victory) Generals <a class="zem_slink" title="Benedict Arnold" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benedict_Arnold" rel="wikipedia">Benedict Arnold</a> and <a class="zem_slink" title="Daniel Morgan" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Morgan" rel="wikipedia">Daniel Morgan</a>.</p>
<p>It was a stunning victory, one that would have widespread effects on the Revolutionary War.  Yet many of the details have been lost to the chest-thumping.</p>
<p>Burgoyne left Canada in June of 1777 with a force that was designed to connect with two other British forces: <a class="zem_slink" title="Barry St. Leger" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_St._Leger" rel="wikipedia">Barry St. Leger</a>&#8216;s mixed army of British, Hessian and Native troops from the west, and <a class="zem_slink" title="William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howe%2C_5th_Viscount_Howe" rel="wikipedia">Sir William Howe</a>&#8216;s main British force from New York City.  They were supposed to meet near Albany, dividing the colonies in two and effectively ending the war and the American Revolution.</p>
<p>It didn&#8217;t exactly go as planned.</p>
<p>First to punk out was Howe.  It was, on the surface, an easy choice: George Washington&#8217;s army was being driven from Pennsylvania, and the rebel capital, Philadelphia was poised for the taking.  To him, it made more sense.  Never mind that the plan to effectively end the war was fucked up from the very beginning&#8211;Washington was the bigger prize.  It would be a prize Howe would never get, and would soon be relieved by <a class="zem_slink" title="Henry Clinton (American War of Independence)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Clinton_%28American_War_of_Independence%29" rel="wikipedia">Sir Henry Clinton</a>.</p>
<p>St. Leger had an even worse time.  He never had any intention of backing out: his mixed force of 2000 Loyalists, British and natives crossed Lake Ontario and landed at Oswego on July 25. The brutal campaigns of Oriskany and <a class="zem_slink" title="Fort Stanwix" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=43.2105555556,-75.45525&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=43.2105555556,-75.45525 (Fort%20Stanwix)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Fort Stanwix</a>&#8211;where American militiamen and native allies slugged it out with St. Leger&#8217;s forces to a stalemate&#8211;changed the story.  It drained the morale of St. Leger&#8217;s native allies, who took their supplies and took off.  It didn&#8217;t help that Benedict Arnold tricked St. Leger into thinking a larger colonial force was coming to relieve Fort Stanwix.  By the time St. Leger shows up at <a class="zem_slink" title="Fort Ticonderoga" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=43.8413888889,-73.3880555556&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=43.8413888889,-73.3880555556 (Fort%20Ticonderoga)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Fort Ticonderoga</a> on September 27, his feeble force was no help to Burgoyne.</p>
<p>Of the three prongs on the British plan, it was Burgoyne, funny enough, who was most successful.  By July he had retaken Fort Ticonderoga, an important strategic and symbolic fortification on the foot of Lake Champlain.  Yet from then on, his campaign slowed to a crawl, as the wagons crating the supplies&#8211;including Burgoyne&#8217;s luggage, china and furniture&#8211;got bogged down in the Hudson highlands.</p>
<p>In the meantime, a quick American victory over Burgoyne&#8217;s advance cavalry at Bennington boosted morale to the point that American forces would swell to close to 15,000.  It included Daniel Morgan&#8217;s Virginia sharpshooters, Benedict Arnold&#8217;s force sent to relieve Fort Stanwix, as well as the main force under Benjamin Lincoln and a new commander, British trained Horatio Gates.</p>
<p>Gates thought he could do a better job than Washington.  Arnold thought he could do a better job than Gates.  Both hated each other.</p>
<p>So how was Saratoga won?</p>
<p>Saratoga was not one battle, but rather a series of maneuvers and two battles over on month.  The first, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Battles of Saratoga" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=42.9988888889,-73.6375&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=42.9988888889,-73.6375 (Battles%20of%20Saratoga)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Battle of Freeman&#8217;s Farm</a>, the British technically won, but at the cost of 600 casualties.  On October 7, the British attacked American fortified positions at Bemis Heights.  In the two actions&#8211;the second punctuated by a daring attack by Arnold who was probably drunk&#8211;the British suffered a total of 1000 casualties.</p>
<p>Outnumber three to one, with the Americans controlling the high ground and surrounding him at the town of Saratoga itself, Burgoyne was forced to surrender his forces.   When he discussed the terms with General Gates, Burgoyne insisted on calling the surrender a &#8220;convention&#8221; rather than a &#8220;capitulation.&#8221;</p>
<p>He fooled no one.</p>
<p>On the final ceremony, after Burgoyne offered his sword to Gates (who refused&#8211;a move that further infuriated Arnold), 6000 soldiers laid down their arms as the band played &#8220;Yankee Doodle.&#8221;</p>
<p>It was very clear to everyone this was no &#8220;convention.&#8221;</p>
<p>Saratoga would invoke the first day of Thanksgiving, decreed by the Continental Congress on December 18, 1777.  It convinced France and Spain that the Americans could actually win the war&#8211;given the right support.  Soon, both countries would sign treaties of alliance with the <a class="zem_slink" title="The States" href="http://www.history.com/topics/states" rel="historycom">United States</a>, transforming a colonial rebellion into a world war.</p>

<p>Recently, as I was packing for the <a href="http://www.saveourschoolsmarch.org">Save Our Schools March </a>this weekend, I ran into some clips of a film I haven’t seen in many years.</p>
<p>Looking at it now, the film still shocks and absorbs me, especially since it was decades ahead of its time.</p>
<p>In 1964, the <a class="zem_slink" title="BBC" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/" rel="homepage">BBC</a> released a film on <a class="zem_slink" title="Television in the United Kingdom" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=0.0,28.2&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=0.0,28.2 (Television%20in%20the%20United%20Kingdom)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">British television</a> stations by director <a class="zem_slink" title="Peter Watkins" href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/peter_watkins" rel="rottentomatoes">Peter Watkins</a>. <em>Culloden</em> was a film about the 1746 <a class="zem_slink" title="Battle of Culloden" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=57.4783333333,-4.0975&amp;spn=0.05,0.05&amp;q=57.4783333333,-4.0975 (Battle%20of%20Culloden)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Battle of Culloden</a> Moor between the <a class="zem_slink" title="British Army" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army" rel="wikipedia">British Army</a> and the rebel forces of the Young Pretender <a class="zem_slink" title="Charles Edward Stuart" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Edward_Stuart" rel="wikipedia">Bonnie Prince Charlie</a>. It was the culmination of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Jacobite Rising of 1745" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobite_Rising_of_1745" rel="wikipedia">Second Jacobite Rebellion</a>, an attempt by Scots and other Britons to depose the German-born king of Great Britain and re-install the Stuart royal family of Scotland.</p>
<p>Yet what makes <em>Culloden</em> so prescient is not the subject material—it is the film itself.</p>
<p>Watkins shot <em>Culloden</em> as a drama-documentary, interviewing the characters (officers, soldiers, and local people) as if they were on a 20th century <a class="zem_slink" title="Television special" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_special" rel="wikipedia">TV special</a>. His narration, unlike many earlier depictions of the battle, is remarkably newslike and spares no detail no matter how gory or disturbing.</p>
<p>Finally, the grim, horrific nature of war, and of war atrocities, is brought into terrible focus—even through the grainy black-and-white lens of 1960s television. It was created as a window on the then-emerging <a class="zem_slink" title="Vietnam War" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War" rel="wikipedia">Vietnam conflict</a> (take a guess which side is which) and the acting seems hokey at times.</p>
<p>But look closely: even among today’s viewers, <em>Culloden</em> can still shock and create furious debate about war, violence, class division, patriotism, and a whole host of social conflicts, just as it did in 1964.</p>
<p>Attached are three excerpts from the film. The entire film is not available streaming, but <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FSME6U/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-2&amp;pf_rd_r=0V62SDRAY11D1DAN4YWB&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=470938631&amp;pf_rd_i=507846">Amazon</a> has a double-feature DVD of both<em> Culloden</em> and Watkins’ 1965 masterpiece<em> <a class="zem_slink" title="The War Game" href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1031176-war_game" rel="rottentomatoes">The War Game</a></em>, a film about nuclear war so intense the BBC wouldn’t show it in full for 20 years.</p>

<p>Do all of history&#8217;s bad guys deserve their reputations?  In the case of Richard III, probably yes and no.</p>
<p>Today in 1483, Richard, Duke of Gloucester was crowned <a class="zem_slink" title="Richard III of England" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_III_of_England" rel="wikipedia">Richard III of England</a>.  It wasn&#8217;t supposed to be that way.</p>
<p>When his brother <a class="zem_slink" title="Edward IV of England" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_IV_of_England" rel="wikipedia">Edward IV</a> died in April, Richard was made <a class="zem_slink" title="Lord Protector" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Protector" rel="wikipedia">Lord Protector</a> of the heir apparent, the future Edward V.  Little Edward was supposed to be crowned on June 22, but all of a sudden, his mother&#8217;s marriage to Edward IV was declared invalid, making the young prince a young bastard.</p>
<p>Who, then, became the king in his stead?  Why his lord protector of course, the king&#8217;s brother, Richard.  The young Edward and his brother were never heard from again, as they became the infamous &#8220;princes in the tower.&#8221;  Richard ruled for two years until he himself was killed in a battle against the forces of <a class="zem_slink" title="Henry VII of England" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_VII_of_England" rel="wikipedia">Henry Tudor</a>, Duke of Richmond, in <a class="zem_slink" title="Battle of Bosworth Field" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=52.5911111111,-1.41027777778&amp;spn=0.05,0.05&amp;q=52.5911111111,-1.41027777778 (Battle%20of%20Bosworth%20Field)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Bosworth Field</a> in 1485.  The last <a class="zem_slink" title="List of English monarchs" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_monarchs" rel="wikipedia">English king</a> to die in battle, Richard was also only the second king to die in battle on English soil since <a class="zem_slink" title="Harold Godwinson" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Godwinson" rel="wikipedia">Harold Godwinson</a> in the 1066 Battle of Hastings.</p>
<p>In terms of facts, this is really it.  Yet Richard III is remembered as a hunchbacked, monstrous villain thanks to one <a class="zem_slink" title="William Shakespeare" href="http://www.last.fm/music/William%2BShakespeare" rel="lastfm">William Shakespeare</a>.</p>
<p>Today, Richard is a very controversial figure.  Many still view his deeds, especially those portrayed in Shakespeare&#8217;s eponymous play, as being genuine.  To an extent, they have a point.  Richard did scheme and connive his way onto the throne.  However, his machinations were certainly not much more than his predecessors&#8217;, especially his brother&#8211;and certainly on par with his successors, especially his usurper Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII.  There is even doubt to his culpability in the death of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Princes in the Tower" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_in_the_Tower" rel="wikipedia">princes in the Tower</a>.</p>
<p>Richard&#8217;s treachery, thus, is pretty par for the course in the wide lens of British history.</p>
<p>In fact, there are many who view Richard as a stablizing force in England at the time.  With the death of Edward IV, many believe Richard enjoyed a popular reputation as a staunch defender of the realm and a force for continuity.  Richard fended off rebellions from within and without when Edward was king, and his succession was viewed as a necessary progression rather than a coup.</p>
<p>Yet the Richard of Shakespeare still creeps into history.  It&#8217;s too bad, because the fictional Richard is so much fun to watch&#8211;his schemes, his backstabbing, and his eventual comeuppance.</p>
<p>Attached is the famous Act I soliloquy of Richard from the 1995 film <em>Richard III</em> starring Sir <a class="zem_slink" title="Ian McKellen" href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/ian_mckellen" rel="rottentomatoes">Ian McKellan</a> in the title role.  It ranks up there with Olivier&#8217;s Richard as among the best performances of the character on film.  It takes a while to get to the actual speech, but it&#8217;s worth it.</p>
<p>I highly recommend viewing the whole film.  There&#8217;s so much bad Shakespeare out there that its so refreshing when it&#8217;s done right&#8230;and few do it better nowadays than Sir Ian.  Enjoy.</p>

<p>A DECLARATION BY THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE <a class="zem_slink" title="The States" href="http://www.history.com/topics/states" rel="historycom">UNITED STATES OF AMERICA</a>, IN GENERAL CONGRESS ASSEMBLED.</p>
<p>WHEN in the course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.</p>
<p>WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain <a class="zem_slink" title="Natural and legal rights" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_and_legal_rights" rel="wikipedia">unalienable Rights</a>, that among these are <a class="zem_slink" title="Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life%2C_liberty_and_the_pursuit_of_happiness" rel="wikipedia">Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness</a>—-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former <a class="zem_slink" title="Government" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government" rel="wikipedia">Systems of Government</a>. The History of the Present King of Great-Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World.</p>
<p>HE has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good.</p>
<p>HE has forbidden his Governors to <a class="zem_slink" title="Pass laws" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pass_laws" rel="wikipedia">pass Laws</a> of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.</p>
<p>HE has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People; unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only.</p>
<p>HE has called together <a class="zem_slink" title="Legislature" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legislature" rel="wikipedia">Legislative Bodies</a> at Places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the Depository of their public Records, for the sole Purpose of fatiguing them into Compliance with his Measures.</p>
<p>HE has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly Firmness his Invasions on the Rights of the People.</p>
<p>HE has refused for a long Time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the Dangers of Invasion from without, and Convulsions within.</p>
<p>HE has endeavoured to prevent the Population of these States; for that Purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their Migrations hither, and raising the Conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.</p>
<p>HE has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.</p>
<p>HE has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the Tenure of their Offices, and Amount and Payment of their Salaries.</p>
<p>HE has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harass our People, and eat out their Substance.</p>
<p>HE has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our Legislature.</p>
<p>HE has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.</p>
<p>HE has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our Laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:</p>
<p>FOR quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us:</p>
<p>FOR protecting them, by a mock Trial, from Punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:</p>
<p>FOR cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World:</p>
<p>FOR imposing taxes on us without our Consent:</p>
<p>FOR depriving us, in many Cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury:</p>
<p>FOR transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended Offences:</p>
<p>FOR abolishing the free System of <a class="zem_slink" title="English law" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_law" rel="wikipedia">English Laws</a> in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an arbitrary Government, and enlarging its Boundaries, so as to render it at once an Example and fit Instrument for introducing the same <a class="zem_slink" title="Absolute monarchy" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_monarchy" rel="wikipedia">absolute Rule</a> in these Colonies:</p>
<p>FOR taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:</p>
<p>FOR suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with Powers to legislate for us in all Cases whatsoever.</p>
<p>HE has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.</p>
<p>HE has plundered our Seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.</p>
<p>HE is, at this Time, transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the Works of Death, Desolation, and Tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and Perfidy, scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous Ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized Nation.</p>
<p>HE has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the Executioners of their Friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.</p>
<p>HE has excited domestic Insurrections among us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.</p>
<p>IN every stage of these Oppressions we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble Terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Prince, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the Ruler of a free People.</p>
<p>NOR have we been wanting in Attentions to our British Brethren. We have warned them from Time to Time of Attempts by their Legislature to extend an unwarrantable Jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the Circumstances of our Emigration and Settlement here. We have appealed to their native Justice and Magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the Ties of our common Kindred to disavow these Usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our Connections and Correspondence. They too have been deaf to the Voice of Justice and of Consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the Necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of Mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends.</p>
<p>WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by the Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That <a class="zem_slink" title="Thirteen Colonies" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_Colonies" rel="wikipedia">these United Colonies</a> are, and of Right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political Connection between them and the <a class="zem_slink" title="Great Britain" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.826,-2.422&amp;spn=5.0,5.0&amp;q=53.826,-2.422 (Great%20Britain)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">State of Great-Britain</a>, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which INDEPENDENT STATES may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of the divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.</p></blockquote>

<p>I may have posted on <a class="zem_slink" title="D-Day" href="http://www.history.com/topics/d-day" rel="historycom">D-Day</a> in the past&#8230;I&#8217;m not quite sure.  It doesn&#8217;t really matter, because the event is still important.</p>
<p>On June 6, 1944, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Allies of World War II" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II" rel="wikipedia">Allied forces</a> of Great Britain, Canada, <a class="zem_slink" title="Free French Forces" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_French_Forces" rel="wikipedia">free France</a> and the <a class="zem_slink" title="The States" href="http://www.history.com/topics/states" rel="historycom">United States</a> began one of the biggest amphibious assaults in American history. In invading the <a class="zem_slink" title="Normandy" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normandy" rel="wikipedia">Normandy</a> coast of France, <a class="zem_slink" title="Allies" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies" rel="wikipedia">the Allies</a> would begin the first real strike into the heart of German-occupied <a class="zem_slink" title="Western Europe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Europe" rel="wikipedia">Western Europe</a>.</p>
<p>The invasion was not flawless. Many of the airborne troops missed their drop points as they parachuted behind enemy lines. German defenses, especially in the American zone, were woefully underestimated. Furthermore, the Allies would be pinned to the peninsula until mid-July, when <a class="zem_slink" title="Cherbourg-Octeville" href="http://www.ville-cherbourg.fr/" rel="homepage">Cherbourg</a> was secured and a clear path made through to Paris.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Invasion of Normandy" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=49.3333333333,-0.566666666667&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=49.3333333333,-0.566666666667 (Invasion%20of%20Normandy)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Normandy invasion</a> was a turning point in world history. For the first time since Napoleon, a hegemonic power invaded another not to conquer, but to liberate. It forced Germany into a two-front war it could not sustain. Finally, it gave the Allies some serious light at the end of a dark, blood-soaked tunnel.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve probably posted it before, but here is the landing scene from <em><a class="zem_slink" title="Saving Private Ryan" href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/saving_private_ryan" rel="rottentomatoes">Saving Private Ryan</a></em>. Though not entirely accurate, it gives as sense of the horror and gravity of that fateful June morning.</p>

<p>The end of the <a class="zem_slink" title="British Empire" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire" rel="wikipedia">Britsh Empire</a> began on May 31, 1902.</p>
<p>On that day, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Treaty of Vereeniging" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Vereeniging" rel="wikipedia">Treaty of Vereeniging</a> ended the three-year long disaster known as the <a class="zem_slink" title="Second Boer War" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Boer_War" rel="wikipedia">Boer War</a>.  It began as a dispute over mining rights and sovereignty of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Boer" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boer" rel="wikipedia">Boer</a> Republics of South Africa, the Transvaal and the <a class="zem_slink" title="Orange Free State" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-29.0,26.0&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=-29.0,26.0 (Orange%20Free%20State)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Orange Free State</a>.  It ended as one of the darkest chapters in <a class="zem_slink" title="History of the British Isles" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_British_Isles" rel="wikipedia">British history</a>.</p>
<p>The war was technically &#8220;over&#8221; in 1900, when the British occupied the Transvaal capital of Pretoria.  However, the remaining Boer commandos of the Orange Free State and the <a class="zem_slink" title="Limpopo" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-24.0,29.0&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=-24.0,29.0 (Limpopo)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Northern Transvaal</a> continued a war of attrition for another two years.   It would see unspeakable atrocities on both sides.  It would see &#8220;scorched-Earth&#8221; tactics and concentration camps that would result in the deaths of thousands.  It would also see continued and violent repression, mutilation and torture of the majority African native population&#8211;a situation not really rectified until almost a century later.</p>
<p>Finally, the Boer War would see <a class="zem_slink" title="British people" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_people" rel="wikipedia">British people</a> start to question the need for a colonial empire.  Though a victory, the war cost thousands of lives and millions of <a class="zem_slink" title="Pound sterling" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_sterling" rel="wikipedia">British pounds</a>.  Britons would then start questioning the use of <a class="zem_slink" title="British Army" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army" rel="wikipedia">British troops</a>, the entanglement in colonial affairs&#8211;even questioning the need for an empire in the first place.</p>
<p>Attached is a nice 5-part synopsis of the Boer War and other African conflicts of the time.  It is very even handed, and its short length is perfect for the classroom.</p>

<p>For many years, many people in <a class="zem_slink" title="The Carolinas" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Carolinas" rel="wikipedia">the Carolinas</a> claimed that the first battle of the <a class="zem_slink" title="American Revolution" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolution" rel="wikipedia">American Revolution</a> did not take place on the <a class="zem_slink" title="Lexington Battle Green" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=42.4494444444,-71.2313888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=42.4494444444,-71.2313888889 (Lexington%20Battle%20Green)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">Lexington Common</a>, but rather in the rugged backcountry of <a class="zem_slink" title="North Carolina" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/usa/the-south/north-carolina" rel="lonelyplanet">North Carolina</a>.</p>
<p>On May 16, 1771, a group of frontier farmers, known as &#8220;Regulators&#8221;, fought against the North Carolina <a class="zem_slink" title="Militia (United States)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia_%28United_States%29" rel="wikipedia">colonial militia</a> at Alamance Creek in North Carolina.  Since about 1760, The Regulators had waged a decade-long guerrilla war against the colonial government, claiming unfair taxation and corrupt practices on the part of colonial officials&#8211;many of which came from the wealthier tobacco plantations in the east.</p>
<p>The <a class="zem_slink" title="War of the Regulation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_the_Regulation" rel="wikipedia">War of the Regulation</a>, as it was called, was not a rebellion against <a class="zem_slink" title="British Raj" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Raj" rel="wikipedia">British rule</a>&#8211;a fact lost on many Carolinians who claim the Revolution began at the Alamance.  It was, in fact, a rebellion against local colonial government, which was perceived as corrupt, subjective and prejudiced against the poorer backcountry <a class="zem_slink" title="Scotch-Irish American" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch-Irish_American" rel="wikipedia">Scots-Irish</a> farmers that flooded the western frontier.  By 1771, the Regulator army swelled to 2000, against the 1000-man militia of governor <a class="zem_slink" title="William Tryon" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tryon" rel="wikipedia">William Tryon</a>.</p>
<p>The Regulators were confident, if poorly armed.  They had dragged the government into a long conflict it wanted to end quickly.  Yet Tryon&#8217;s massed artillery were no match for the frontier army.  After early promise, the relentless cannon overwhelmed the Regulators and the rest fled into the woods.</p>
<p>In a final act of savagery, Tryon ordered the forest burned with the remaining rebels inside.  It was a prelude to his better known act of arson: the 1777-1779 punitive campaigns against coastal Connecticut towns where every town from Greenwich to New Haven was plundered and burned.</p>
<p>Although the Alamance was not the start of the Revolution, it brought to a head many of the conflicts that would spark the bigger rebellion four years later.  Corrupt colonial officials, high taxation, the suppression and disenfranchisement of the poor: all these factors were dealt with in one way or another by all thirteen colonies.</p>
<p>It was in the backcountry of North Carolina, however, where these problems were first brought into sharp, deadly focus.</p>

<p>Thus stars must have aligned perfectly, as the day in which <a class="zem_slink" title="Osama bin Laden" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osama_bin_Laden" rel="wikipedia">Osama bin Laden</a> was announced dead marks the anniversary of another milestone in the fight against oppression and terror.</p>
<p>On May 2, 1945, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Red Army" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army" rel="wikipedia">Red Army</a> finally announces the capture of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Berlin" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/germany/berlin" rel="lonelyplanet">German capital</a> of Berlin.  With the <a class="zem_slink" title="Flag of the Soviet Union" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Soviet_Union" rel="wikipedia">Soviet flag</a> flying over the Reichstag, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Bundestag" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=52.5186111111,13.3761111111&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=52.5186111111,13.3761111111 (Bundestag)&amp;t=h" rel="geolocation">German parliament</a> building, the <a class="zem_slink" title="European Theatre of World War II" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Theatre_of_World_War_II" rel="wikipedia">European theater of World War II</a> was effectively over.</p>
<p>At the same time, in the <a class="zem_slink" title="Italian Campaign (World War I)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Campaign_%28World_War_I%29" rel="wikipedia">Italian front</a>, German general <a href="/wiki/Heinrich_von_Vietinghoff">Heinrich von Vietinghoff</a> signs the documents of surrender, as German forces give up all of Italy to the Allies.  <a class="zem_slink" title="Benito Mussolini" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benito_Mussolini" rel="wikipedia">Benito Mussolini</a>, <a class="zem_slink" title="Adolf Hitler" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler" rel="wikipedia">Hitler</a>&#8216;s busom buddy, was shot and strung up a few days previously on April 28, and Hitler would meet his own inglorious end on the 30th.</p>
<p>Like Osama bin Laden, their deaths were long overdue.  Furthermore, the world is a better place without them.  Their deaths were met with little saddness: just as today, crowds gathered in London, Times Square, Moscow and other cities to celebrate the end of lives that did far more harm than any good.</p>
<p>My grandmother had a soft spot for Mussolini.  Good thing she&#8217;s not around to hear this: <a class="zem_slink" title="Duce" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duce" rel="wikipedia">Il Duce</a> was as big a piece of crap as <a class="zem_slink" title="Führer" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%BChrer" rel="wikipedia">Der Fuhrer</a>, Comrade Stalin, and the turbaned maniac we just double-tapped.  We&#8217;re a better country&#8211;nee, a better planet&#8211;without these people.</p>
<p>Good riddance.</p>
