Videos for the Classroom: Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony

In honor of Womens’ History Month–which is rapidly ending–here is a video of Ken Burns and Paul Barnes’ 1999 documentary about two of the most pivotal actors in the womens’ suffrage movement in the United States.

The film is not perfect by any means.  Yet that Ken Burns shmaltz can be a useful vehicle for more nuanced, complex conversations about womens’ rights and the role of women in 19th and 20th century America.
